SHALLCROSS NOW HEADS THE WINTER LEAGUE

For once the weather wasn’t the problem at Castletown Golf Club. Essential hollow tining made putting a lottery so it was not just the greens that got aerated. David Kay (28), the new co-leader of the winter league, managed to miss a tap-in par on the 18th. It cost him the win on the day as well as the two extra ranking points that would have gone with it. Consequently, Kay now shares first place in the league on 20 points with the previous leader Sam Skelton and Tim Shallcross.

The victor of the fifth round on Saturday was Kevin Lewin (22). Starting with a four pointer birdie he then appeared to lose focus and finished the front nine in 50 shots for a mere 16 points. Then a different picture emerged as Lewin joined the dots and the putts plopped in. With a fantastic four over par back nine Lewin added an unbeatable 25 points to his tally. Lewin now has 14 ranking points placing him seventh in the league.

Two other players equalled Lewin’s 41 points. The afore-mentioned Kay, who has been having swing coaching with our pro Charlie Simpson, added another 10 ranking points for his second successive runner-up place. Perhaps putting lessons should be on the agenda. Birdies on the 12th and 18th enabled Greg Stalker (8) to complete the course in three over par for his 41 points and third place.

Shallcross (20), who Simpson has helped subdue the ‘J.Arthur Ranks’, to win the last round, added eight ranking points for finishing fourth with 40 points on Saturday. This was despite an N/R on the Road Hole and two double bogeys on the back nine. Dave Litton (20) and Steve Zybert (13) matched Shallcross’s score to take fifth and sixth place respectively. However, Zybert’s winning are enhanced with a double dip from the two’s pot for his nett hole-in-one on the par four 15th.

In challenging conditions Maryann Dunn (21) just pipped Julie Amphlett (18) to the spoils in the mixed midweek nine hole open Stableford. They both scored 19 points, three ahead of third placed Sharon Pope (41).

This coming Saturday sees the fourth round of the winter eclectic series and please note that the start sheets have been opened for three open competitions being held over Easter. Early booking is recommended.
