The Tower Insurance sponsored 4BBB pairs turkey shoot competition rearranged to be played on Saturday once again had to be postponed due to poor weather. This event is now scheduled to take place on Saturday 1st February. Not surprisingly, Sunday’s congregation for the nine hole Stableford was larger than usual. Being a mixed competition the ladies received a two shot adjustment to their handicaps, but the gents were playing off forward tees which should have evened things out.

Jane Holt (21) was obviously not reading the script but was definitely on song. Her winning 24 Stableford points was six better than any of her followers. Holt’s fine five over par performance translated into five gross pars and four nett pars.

Island champion Lynda Simpson (7), who accompanied Holt, led a trio of players finishing with 18 points. It took a three pointer par on the 9th to place Simpson second ahead of Juan Costain (5) who only scored two points for his par. Dawn Sissons (40) had matched them both over the last six holes but an N/R on the last put her out of contention at the final three countback stage.

Earlier in the week Stuart Butler (19) also scored 24 points to win the equally well supported midweek mixed Stableford. Starting with three 2 pointer bogeys Butler nett birdied all the remaining holes, thus scoring and unbeatable three points on each.

Tami James (32) secured second spot with 22 points purloined from eight scoring holes having N/R’d the par five 7th. In third place on 21 points another midweek specialist, Julian Brindle (18), collected five pars and three nett pars, but went astray on the Road Hole.

The second round of the Stableford winter league is scheduled for this coming Saturday and, so far, the weather forecast is favourable. With all the recent poor weather our golf pro Charlie Simpson is relieved that the Castletown swing room refurbishment is now complete. He has resumed indoor coaching using the new Trackman machine in conjunction with the existing Skytrak shot shape recorder. Call 822211 to set up a personalised improvement programme.
