Castletown Golf Links
Those that turned up at Castletown Golf Club on Saturday found the course in great condition and enjoyed the relatively calm but overcast conditions. Poor weather had been predicted so over half the registered entrants prematurely cancelled their entry to the Tower Insurance sponsored yellow tees turkey shoot Stableford qualifying competition.
Having just been awarded a handicap new member David Kay (30) got off to the perfect start. He made the most of the short course posting 42 winning points from sixteen scoring holes. These included three nett eagles and six nett birdies. Only the dog-leg 4th and the par three 8th escaped his efforts so Kay will now play off (28).
Fighting for second place there was a pile-up of players who all stepped in with 39 points. Having finished fourth in the pairs competition last week, Bob Taylor became this week’s countback king by posting a five over par back nine worth 21 points.
Coming third was Will Halsall (11) who shot four over on each leg which both ended with double bogeys. His 19 inward points being one better than Richard Corke (5) who was level par until he bogeyed two of the last three holes. In fifth, but out of the prizes, the final countback casualty was Dave Allan (11). Three birdies helped him soar to 23 outward points, but he sunk back in 16 after an N/R on the 12th.
Coming sixth Mark Walker (12) was the first of five players carding 38 points. Completing the back nine in three over he scored 21 inward points. Each of the others - Paul Keeley (8), Frankie Doherty (8), Colin E Magee (11) and Stuart Campbell (13) - was conveniently separated by one inward point.
This Wednesday sees the weekly nine hole Stableford and on Thursday the course will be closed from 10:00 until 14:32 for the Beaujolais Cup charity day. On Saturday the next in the Tower Insurance turkey shoot series is a four-man Texas Scramble off fifteen percent of combined handicaps. So far 94 players have signed up.
