Castletown Golf Club

In winning Saturday’s Tower Insurance sponsored 4BBB by four clear shots Stephen Keegan (8) was quick to praise his playing partner Colin C Magee (14) who produced some stunning shots following recent lessons with Castletown Golf Links pro Charlie Simpson. Their better ball score was two under gross par worth 52 Stableford points off 90 percent of their actual handicaps.

Magee was one under on eleven scoring holes and matched Keegan on some of the others where Keegan putted out first. Keegan birdied the Road Hole for their first four pointer and Magee matched this with his first birdie on the 6th. Another came with their longest converted putt, Magee’s five footer on the 16th for a share of the two’s pot. Having missed a two foot birdie attempt on the opening hole perhaps Magee will invest some of his winnings in a putting lesson.

Second on Saturday were Jerry Linehan (23) and Chris Reynolds (9) who went round in three over par for 48 points. Linehan’s main claim to fame was his lucrative birdie two on the 13th. The bionic Reynolds had birdies on the 4th and 10th leading to a one over gross par performance on twelve scoring holes.

Mark Jones (18) opened with a four pointer birdie and finished at one over from nine holes, six of which he parred. David Campbell (18) added three nett birdies and six nett pars to their seven over par third placed 47 points.

Fourth place was hotly contested with three teams on 46 points. Grabbing the final prize on countback were Bob Taylor (14) with Stuart Brawn (14), narrowly pipping Mr Captain Geoff Sugden (23) accompanied by Jeff Magee (14), who is Colin’s brother. Finally, the pairing of Will Laughlin (13) and Robert Quine (18) took sixth place after countback.

Gemma Wild (30) birdied the 8th for a nett hole-in-one to help her win the mixed mid-week nine hole Stableford with 21 points. Coming a close second on 20 points Kevin Amphlett (14) was delighted with the new extra-stiff shafts in his state-of-the-art PXG irons. There were three disturbances of the peace, two in delight, and one in disgust. These followed two birdies and a Road Hole blob from our ebullient immediate past captain Mike Horsthuis (9) who took third with 19 points.

This coming Saturday, subject to the weather, there is a qualifying Stableford yellow tees competition followed by another mixed mid-week nine hole Stableford on Wedneday 20th November.

Although Beaujolais Day is being celebrated in France on the third Thursday in November there is still time to remind you that our outgoing captains, Julie Amphlett and Geoff Sugden, are holding the Beaujolais Cup shotgun start team Stableford charity AM-AM competition on the following Thursday at 10am on 28th November. So far eleven teams have signed to support ‘Forget Me Not’ and ‘Autism Initiatives’.

The subsidized entry fee is £25 for members and £50 for non members. This includes coffee and bacon baps available from 9am followed by a two course Bay Green lunch during the prize presentation. Enter online at or telephone Andi Howland on 822211 for more details.
