SIX OF THE BEST FOR STRAIGHT HITTING STEVEN BOYD

Poor weather on Saturday put paid to the first team competition in this year’s Tower Insurance sponsored turkey shoot series at Castletown Golf Club. The postponed Stableford Waltz will be rearranged for early in the new year.

Over the winter we are playing off the forward tees, and numerous bunkers are being renovated. Consequently, a non-qualifying individual Stableford was arranged for those available to play on Remembrance Sunday.

The winner, straight hitting Steven Boyd (2), struck six birdies and kept a six off his card. Suffering nothing worse than three bogey fives Boyd had turned at one under for 20 points. He added another 21 points with a tremendous two under par back nine. Even on a short course 69, nett 67, is a super score.

Winter golf specialist Frankie Doherty (8) was the clubhouse leader after nine holes having accumulated 21 points for his gritty one over gross performance. Four bogeys followed then Doherty delivered a birdie finish for a 76, nett 68, worth 40 points and second place.

Mark Teare (6) also turned with 21 points and ended with 40 points. Bogeys on the 14th and 16th left Teare at two over and it meant he missed out on countback eventually decided on the last six holes.

Coming fourth on 36 points fisherman Bob Taylor (16) snapped up a birdie followed by three nett birdies. Then reality bit on the Road Hole where he landed the first of three N/Rs.

Retired policeman Guy Pickard (6) apprehended top spot with 21 points in the mixed mid-week nine hole competition. His lovely level par lap opened with a birdie followed by another on the 7th. Positive progress was only arrested by bogeys on the 3rd and 5th holes. Five nett birdies and two nett pars helped Maryann Dunn (23) reach 20 points for second place. Liz Stirling (30) converted 53 shots into 18 points for third place.

This coming Saturday Tower Insurance is kindly sponsoring a 4BBB in the second of their turkey shoot series.
