Castletown Golf Links
We played a Stableford in the old course layout at Castletown last Saturday and judging from some scores, mine included, there were either a few wrong turns or perhaps we used hickory shafts.
Making no such spurious excuses Anthony O’Mahony (9) began with a bogey but then burnt up the course to finish at four over even after incurring a two shot putting penalty. Three beautiful birdies on the back nine enabled O’Mahony to add 24 points to his opening 19 for a winning 43 points.
Taking second spot late starter Will Halsall (11) made up for an N/R on the 3rd with a four pointer on the next hole, which was the 14th. Another arrived with his two on the 11th, which is normally the 8th. Halsall’s haul of 42 points came from 17 scoring holes covered in just five over par.
Having executed eight three pointers Donald Buchanan (18) had only utilised half of his 20 shot allocation after 16 holes. Unfortunately, ending with an N/R followed by a double bogey only added one point to the 40 already accumulated so Buchanan had to settle for third place.
Opening with a nett eagle Richard Wild (19) amassed 16 points after six holes but turned with 18 after N/Rs on our usual 4th and 5th. A birdie turned into a nett albatross on the old 7th and Wild went on to post 40 points to take fourth place in a four way countback with Kyle McConnell (14), John Lee (18) who was the first yellow tee’s finisher, and Stuart Campbell (13).
Tenth placed David Murray (6) was just three over after 16 holes. He then dropped three more to end on 78, nett 72, for 39 points after the three shot blue tee’s adjustment.
With 19 points midweek golfing specialist Rick O’Donnell (19) added the nine hole prize to the bouquet he had won the week before in the finale of ‘Flower Power’ sponsored series.
This coming Saturday we are back to team golf with the first in the turkey shoot series. Playing off the yellow tees, two scores are required on the par 5’s, three apply on the par 4’s and all four count on the three short holes.MALCOLM LAMBERT
