Having scored 43, 41 and 35 points respectively the previous week in the Standard Bank sponsored Stableford, Steven Boyd, Gez Bradley and David Quayle combined to cash-in again by walking away with Saturday’s Texas Scramble. Their 59, 13 under par score, included eagles on every par five and their nett score (57.9) was an incredible 2.5 shots better than their closest rivals after application of a 15% three man team handicap adjustment.
Michael Charmer, Andrew Gerrard, Ross Mulligan and Steve Zybert secured second spot with 63, nett 60.4. Having hoisted eight birdies over the first 12 holes they were somewhat stymied by a procession of pars which eventually ended with their ninth birdie on the 18th.
Shooting six under par Richard Dunn, Steve McGowan, Mark Reynolds and Jon Wild deducted a further (4.2) ten percent four person handicap adjustment to take third place on nett 61.8. The next three teams were each separated by just 0.1.
Bad weather put paid to the midweek Flower Power sponsored challenge but on the previous Sunday Heather Skinner (14) won the Anne Eades Trophy on a convoluted countback. Second placed Jane Holt had accumulated 22 points after eleven holes but blobbed the 12th. Unfortunately, for her, this was a 12 hole Stableford and Skinner’s 22 points were more backend loaded. Steph Gregg (23) finished third on 20 points.
Congratulations to Simon Murray who slammed Sam Skelton 6 & 5 in the W. A. Kirkpatrick singles knockout final, which was officiated by the vice-captain Graham Harris who won this event last year. It was Murray’s fourth win in this competition.
The Steve Bradshaw Betterball Matchplay final resulted in a win for the above mentioned Steve McGowan and Chris Reynolds who triumphed over Peter Robertson and Keith Featherstone.
This coming Saturday sees a Stableford Rumble take place where three scores count on each hole.
