Castletown Golf Club

Immediate past captain Mike Horsthuis (9) had fun with his golfing partner Phil Games (14) in winning the rearranged second turkey shoot sponsored by Tower Insurance at Castletown Golf Club on Saturday. Off 9/10th of their handicaps their one over par score was converted into 46 Stableford points. Games came in on ten holes and his second birdie was on the 8th so he also gets a share of the two’s pot.

Missing out on countback second placed Tom Harris (+2) and John Newson (5) amazingly finished at eight under gross par. Birdie machine Harris slotted in eight birdies on eleven holes and Newson was one under on the other seven.

Three teams were tied for third place with 45 points and a convoluted countback favoured Bob Taylor and Francis Thoday who both play off (14). Thoday was one over on eleven holes but his birdie on the 13th was unlikely to have been insured. Taylor netted one birdie with his solid three over par contribution. Messrs Paul Eckersley/Chris Reynolds and Mark Jones/Bert Hopkinson we’re the unfortunate countback casualties.

Our new lady captain Julie Amphlett enjoyed her drive-in prior to Christmas and it coincided with a mixed ‘midweeker’ nine holes Stableford which was won on 19 points by Jane Holt who has enjoyed a stellar year; her handicap has tumbled from (31) to (20). Lynda Simpson (5) came second on 18 points beating Claire Walker (35) and the above mentioned Mike Horsthuis on countback. Horsthuis had the last laugh as he took third prize being the first male home.

So far 88 players have signed up for the first round of the Winter League Stableford which begins this coming Saturday.

Happy New Year.
