There was a good weather window for a few hours from mid-morning on Saturday so 27 desperate souls slipped out to compete in the second round of the Winter League Stableford. Probably the lure of Six Nations Rugby on the TV proved too great a temptation for the majority of members.

Mark Walker (12) from the Shore Hotel managed 33 points to win on the 15 hole course which was in remarkable condition given the volume of rain it had needed to absorb. A four pointer birdie on the 4th and a double bogey on the 6th were the only variations from the procession of pars and bogeys which led to Walker’s steady seven over par round.

Stuart Butler (18) had a scintillating second nine scoring an impressive 22 points for second place on countback. Butler served up as many points on his last three holes (ten) as he had accumulated at the turn. Having also recorded 32 points in the first round Butler is now in pole position on the Winter League leader board.

The countback casualty in third Gez Bradley (3) went round in luscious level par. His 32 points included four birdies one of which was a money maker two on the 16th having carded a disappointing double bogey on the previous hole.

Finishing with 30 points Nigel Gregg (12) had bookend birdies on the back nine and those nett eagles lifted him into fourth place just ahead on countback of the final prize winner Will Halsall (11) who unfortunately N/R’d the 13th.

Earlier in the week Julian Brindle, Tami James and Paul Keeley finished with 25, 23 and 22 points respectively to fill the podium places in the ‘Midweeker’ 12 holes Stableford. 22 players competed in the previous Sunday’s mixed 12 holer which was won by Karen Faragher with 25 points, one ahead of this year’s lady captain Louna Vermeulen and two clear of third placed Frankie Doherty who failed to finish the 10th.

So far 110 players have signed up for this coming Saturday’s 4 man Texas Scramble but as always there are bound to be some teams looking for a late replacement so either turn up on the day or register your availability with the Pro Shop by phoning 822211.
