Castletown Golf Links
Another soggy Saturday saw the postponement of the first round of the Stableford Winter League at Castletown. There had been some golf played over the week beginning with a mixed Stableford the previous Sunday. Only six players ventured out in the twelve hole competition which was won by Karen Faragher (7) with 23 points.
Faragher fired two nett birdies and scored points on every hole as did second placed Ben Smaller (5) who parred half the holes but a handful of nett bogeys restricted him to 21 points. Two points back Shirley Price (5) birdied the 10th and parred three holes to pip the lady captain Louna Vermeulen (19) on countback for third place.
There was some marvellous winter weather for the Wednesday 12 hole ‘Midweeker’ and 21 players enjoyed the course and conditions with the greens coming in for particular praise. Guy Pickard (3) and newly elected lady vice-captain Julie Amphlett (21) both played to their handicaps. Pickard picked-up the top prize as 14 of his 24 points were scored on the second half whereas Amphlett’s were equally earned. Four players were tied for the final podium place on 23 points. Richard Dunn (5), who parred all but four of his holes, headed the list ahead of Les Gale (13), Julian Brindle (20) and Paul Keeley (5) respectively.
This coming Saturday a 4BBB has been arranged and almost every tee times have been booked. Hence, if you know that you won’t make it please withdraw as soon as possible in order to allow another to take up the vacancy.
Finally, I’m sad to report that long time club stalwart Brian Graham passed away peacefully in the early hours of Saturday at Hospice, Isle of Man. For many years former insurance industry expert Brian sponsored one of our summer competitions and on behalf of the club I extend our condolences to his widow Valerie and to the Graham family. Brian's funeral will take place at 11.:30 Friday 26th January at Malew Church.
