All the tees were in operation at Castletown on Saturday and early starter Sam Skelton decided to play off the blues and so received a three shot stroke amendment. Playing off (8) rather than (5) was an inspired choice as Skelton birdied the first three holes to notch up ten stableford points and added another twelve by turning in level par after a sequence of bogeys followed by pars. 23 points flowed from his one under par back nine as Skelton shot two birdies, three nett birdies and four pars to win the competition by one point with a splendid 45.
Tuesday 8th May 2018
59 teams took part in the Captain’s Day 4BBB charity event which was won by Andrew Davies (9) and Mark Jones (17) with 47 points.
Sunday 29th April 2018
The Woods Cup, a much maligned bogey competition, was switched back to a qualifier on Saturday as otherwise we would have three non qualifying weekend events in a row. It was well won by John Lee (19) with +5. Other than an N/R on the 7th Lee had a procession of pars or nett pars which continued until the 15th when, at +6, the sequence was spoilt by back-to-back double bogeys. A cleverly crafted par, his seventh, against the wind on the 17th and then his eighth nett par to finish equated to a win by one shot.
Sunday 22nd April 2018
The top team of Andrew Davies (10), Dave Litton (20), Angus Alexander (7) and Dominic Litton (15) carded [2 x 7], [6 x 6], [7 x 5] and [3 x 4] for an amazing 97 points which was four better than the field. Davies and Alexander acted as the anchor men, with Davies completing 16 holes in just one over par and Alexander played par golf on the 13 where his score was recorded. Littons senior and junior joined in with a nett eagle apiece and nine nett birdies between them.
Sunday 15th April 2018
Andrew McGee (20) had the game of his life in the first round of this year’s SMP Partners sponsored medal series at Castletown on Saturday. Shooting a nett 67 is something special. Doing it with an 11 on your card is amazing.
Sunday 8th April 2018
There was a two way tie on 42 points in the Captain’s Drive-In on Saturday. Winning the specially minted commemorative medal was the smooth swinging Steven Glynn (21) who is now off (19) but is destined to be lower.Glynn, who in February won the third round of the Winter League Stableford, has been having lessons with Charlie Simpson and is more consistent now. There were a few three putts and the odd duff shot which restricted his Stableford score on the 5th, 11th and 15th but a four pointer nett eagle on the 14th proved crucial on countback.
Sunday 1st April 2018
Ian Hodgkinson (18) who was one of only four players to meet or beat their handicap. His winning 39 points was both back nine biased and heavily influenced by wind direction. Hodgkinson hit a real purple patch from the 13th to the 15th where he sunk a bountiful birdie 2 for four points and followed it up with two nett birdies. Facing the full force of the wind it was a case of hit and hope on the last three holes but three 5’s for five points saw Hodgkinson home safely.
Sunday 25th March 2018
George McArdle (18) was tempted out to make the most of the generous recent four shot adjustment to his handicap. That, combined with a swing tip from Mike Williams, helped him turn back the sands of time and win the third round of the Winter Eclectic Medal by three clear shots.
Monday 12th March 2018
Making a mockery of his high handicap Lewin parred four of the remaining holes to hoist an amazing 24 back nine Stableford points making 41 in total. Not surprisingly, he won the day’s competition by seven clear shots. It also increased his Winter League points to 27 making him the outright winner of the Winter League by an emphatic margin.
Tuesday 6th March 2018
With St Patrick’s Day conveniently falling on a Saturday this year we are hoping for massive support for our Paddy’s Day open event taking place on 17th March.
Sunday 25th February 2018
The third round of the Winter League Stableford at Castletown on Saturday was won by Steven Glynn (20) on 38 points. Mark Walker (12) almost made it back-to-back Winter League wins and now heads the leader board having secured second spot this week with 37 points.
Sunday 18th February 2018
Pete Thomas (9), Ian Hodgkinson (16), Mark Reynolds (18) and Paul Eckersley (7) tonked in ten birdies between them to win the competition by over two shots which, in this format, is highly unusual as decimal points usually separate the prize winners.
Sunday 11th February 2018
Mark Walker (12) from the Shore Hotel managed 33 points to win on the 15 hole course which was in remarkable condition given the volume of rain it had needed to absorb. A four pointer birdie on the 4th and a double bogey on the 6th were the only variations from the procession of pars and bogeys which led to Walker’s steady seven over par round.
Monday 5th February 2018
Playing off (14) island squad cricketer Oli Steriopulos knocked in nine pars to win the second round of the Winter Eclectic Medal competition despite finishing with a quadruple bogey at Castletown on Saturday. His twelve over par performance on the shortened 15 hole course also included a triple bogey on the 6th.
Sunday 28th January 2018
Achieving 35 points Kevin Lewin (26) used his shots wisely to win the Winter League stableford; the first in the series of four rounds to be played off the white tees. Lewin’s procession of fives, sixes or sevens was only broken by a par four on the 17th but the beauty of the handicap system is that, with the exception of a triple bogey on the 10th, his 99 shots were converted into points on every hole.
Sunday 21st January 2018
Despite poor weather there was a fine turn-out for the 4BBB at Castletown on Saturday. The winning team by two points was John Byrne (9) and Mark Todd (12) completing the course in just one over par. Byrne was in formidable form beginning with a birdie and adding two more to amass 29 points off ten holes which he humbled in three under par. Todd tallied 17 points with five pars, two bogeys and a double bogey for their only single pointer which was incurred on the 11th.
Monday 15th January 2018
I’m sad to report that long time club stalwart Brian Graham passed away in the early hours of Saturday at Hospice, Isle of Man. For many years former insurance industry expert Brian sponsored one of our summer competitions and on behalf of the club I extend our condolences to his widow Valerie and the Graham family.
Sunday 31st December 2017
Dominic Litton (17) finished the season in style winning the stormy Stableford on Saturday with 35 points plus supplementing his income with one of only three 2’s scored on the day. Blobs on the 3rd and 15th were counteracted with a birdie on the 13th, five pars, seven nett pars and just three nett bogeys.
