After countback the winner of the Captain’s Cup, with 44 points, was Greg Stalker. Having come third in the George Woods Bogey Cup, second in the June SMP Partners medal and winning a midweek Stableford Stalker has halved his handicap from (8) to (4) in the past month.
Monday 27th July 2020
The winning team, from Rowany GC, were led by island squad player Mark Sutton, Rushen United footballers Dan Hattersley and Aaron Hawley and their former team-mate Josh Kelly. They proved to have the prefect blend for a Texas Scramble. 13 birdies and 5 pars led to an incredible gross 59 which reduced to 56.1 after application of ten percent of their handicaps.
Monday 20th July 2020
With six gross pars, eleven nett pars and only one nett bogey David Laughlin (20) won the SMP Partners monthly medal at Castletown Golf Club on Saturday. His 87, nett 65, was two clear of the field and, being the latest in a line of consistent performances, Laughlin’s handicap has dropped by three shots during July.
Sunday 12th July 2020
Steven Boyd, could have been cursing a clunky chip causing a double bogey on the 18th. Fortunately, at three under gross par up to that point Boyd, playing off the back tees, had done enough to win. This he credits to club pro Charlie Simpson who has helped him fashion a forgiving fade over his natural draw.

Over 200 players turned out for Saturday’s Capital International sponsored Castletown Cup competitions. This was a record entry number. The ladies Castletown Cup was won by former captain, Jax Fisher with a neat nett 74. Gareth Morris needed a card countback to take the men's trophy with his nifty nett 65.

The bogey men were out in force at Castletown Golf Club on Saturday. Nearly forty percent of the field synchronized their scores with the stroke index. It was therefore only a slight surprise that there was a two-way tie at the top on (+9) in the George Woods Bogey Cup. Both the winner, Jon Wagstaffe, and second-placed Ash Sansbury were playing off (14) including two strokes for utilising the white tees.
Sunday 21st June 2020
With the favourable breeze big hitting Dave Quayle (4) relished taking on the championship tees in the SMP Partners sponsored monthly medal at Castletown Golf Club on Saturday. Elated by his eagle on the 12th, Quayle was equanimous about three blighting bogeys. With the four stroke black tees allowance Quayle’s quality one over par performance transformed into a competition winning nett 65.

A special mention goes to our vice-captain Gez Bradley (1). He may have finished sixth with 43 points, but Bradley had the distinction of adding a new course record (70) to his list of golfing achievements.

Amid some celebration competition golf resumed at Castletown Golf Links this past weekend. As it was a late announcement most players were content to play their already booked friendly social game. Having to download an App in order to upload Covid-19 virus free scores put off some players and the windy weather dissuaded others.
Sunday 31st May 2020
Our captain, Graham Harris, was presented with a plaque by club president Sam Skelton. The socially distanced onlookers also politely applauded as our honorary secretary, Robert Gardner, and the lady captain Maryann Dunn made up the first fourball setting off from new tee boxes.

Contrary to rumour and expectation the Department of Education, Sport and Culture has just confirmed that, subject to acceptable risk assessments, golf clubs across the island can resume four-ball golf with immediate effect. This is welcome news and was the only logical outcome following the Chief Minister’s recent announcement that up to ten people could congregate, subject to social distancing, in people’s gardens.
Tuesday 19th May 2020
Golfers across the island are eagerly awaiting the resumption of social golf but bureaucracy and perceived congestion problems could hamper your plans to arrange that much awaited friendly four-ball. No, I am not talking about snotty nosed players, but the volume of vehicles arriving at the same time at golf club car parks.
Wednesday 13th May 2020
As at noon Wednesday 13th May nothing had been heard from IOM Golf relating to the introduction of phase 2 of the Conditions for Return to Golf for the island golf clubs. Hence your intrepid correspondent decided to contact David Ashford MHK, the Minister for Health and Social Care. He was taking questions live on the Mannin Line on Manx Radio.

On the day Townell took the top prize by one countback point but Tim Callow was crowned champion of the Eclectic League with an amazing 17 under par nett 55.
Monday 16th March 2020
The victor of the fifth round on Saturday was Kevin Lewin (22). Starting with a four pointer birdie he then appeared to lose focus and finished the front nine in 50 shots for a mere 16 points. Then a different picture emerged as Lewin joined the dots and the putts plopped in. With a fantastic four over par back nine Lewin added an unbeatable 25 points to his tally.
Sunday 8th March 2020
The top-spot two-way tie with 40 points was decided over the last three holes and the next three contenders stepped in with 39 points creating another countback conundrum.
Sunday 1st March 2020
Tim Shallcross (20), made an excellent start dropping just two shots over the first five holes. A blob on the 6th left him on 14 points at the turn. With the wind whipping up Shallcross continued to exploit his handicap for 32 overall and distanced himself from the chasing pack by finishing with a three pointer par.

Congratulations go to Rowany’s pro golfer Tom Gandy for his efforts on the Sunshine Tour in South Africa. Not only did he make the cut but up until the 8th hole in the final round at Fancourt he was on the front page of the leaderboard. Unfortunately, a quadruple bogey on the 9th dropped him out of contention. Bravely finishing with back-to-back birdies Gandy clawed his way up to joint 25th place on 11 under par.
Sunday 9th February 2020
In the third round of the Winter League Jake Sansbury (13), in his first concluded round since last July, made the most of the challenging conditions to card 37 winning points. Our club president Sam Skelton (5) came eight scoring 4 ranking points to add to his previous 13. This puts him top of the Winter League on 17 ranking points.
Sunday 2nd February 2020
The eventual winners Paul Eckersley (6) and Martin Derbyshire (14) dovetailed well, particularly on the back nine which they completed in one over par. This enabled them to triumph on countback that went down to the last three holes. Derbyshire dug-in to deliver the dynamic ending with a nett birdie followed by a nett eagle. Playing level par over nine holes, Eckersley’s efforts ended with a three pointer on the 18th.
