In his first round this year Laughlin continued his winning ways by adding the second round of the winter stableford league to his collection. His 44 points came after an indifferent start comprised of a double bogey, an N/R and three bogeys in the first seven holes. However, from the 8th onwards Laughlin chipped and putted in a procession of pars.
Tuesday 14th January 2020
Sunday’s congregation for the nine hole Stableford was larger than usual. Jane Holt (21) was obviously not reading the script but was definitely on song. Her winning 24 Stableford points was six better than any of her followers. Earlier in the week Stuart Butler (19) also scored 24 points to win the equally well supported midweek mixed Stableford.
Sunday 5th January 2020
Bob Taylor started the new year in style by landing the first round of the Winter Eclectic.
Sunday 29th December 2019
Former captain Chris Kelly (19) definitely had his eye in at Castletown Golf Club on Saturday. Winning the first round of the winter league with 42 points Kelly birdied both the 3rd, which is the second longest hole, and the 13th which is the shortest. With 21 points on both halves Kelly completed the course in 13 over with two pars on each side.
Sunday 15th December 2019
For the first time since 2001 the Castletown ladies have won the Isle of Man Day League. At a presentation in Peel team captain Steph Gregg received the shield from Lady Diana Gozney.
Sunday 8th December 2019
Whilst some teams displayed the co-ordination of a jelly the winning quartet of Frankie Doherty (8), Guy Pickard (6), Mark Kneale (17) and David Allan (11) only wobbled once. Their 89 points was a show of synchronicity, other than on the 13th, their bogey hole, where they stumbled, scoring only one point.
Tuesday 3rd December 2019
Having attended the finale of the 2009 and 2017 World Tour golf championships Castletown Golf Club member Adrian Copley and his wife Ann were delighted that they were able to do so again this year. They had a wonderful time but sadly their memorable holiday to the Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai ended tragically.
Sunday 1st December 2019
The forecasted frost failed to stop Saturday’s sponsored Texas Scramble. 28 teams took part in the Tower Insurance turkey trot which was won with 55.4 by Mark Jones, Alex Townell, Dave Litton and his son Dominic. Their seven under gross par score included five birdies and an eagle on the 3rd.
Sunday 24th November 2019
Tower Insurance sponsored the yellow tees turkey shoot Stableford qualifying competition. Having just been awarded a handicap new member David Kay (30) got off to the perfect start. He made the most of the short course posting 42 winning points from sixteen scoring holes. These included three nett eagles and six nett birdies. Only the dog-leg 4th and the par three 8th escaped his efforts so Kay will now play off (28).
Sunday 17th November 2019
In winning Saturday’s Tower Insurance sponsored 4BBB by four clear shots Stephen Keegan (8) was quick to praise his playing partner Colin C Magee (14) who produced some stunning shots following recent lessons with Castletown Golf Links pro Charlie Simpson. Their better ball score was two under gross par worth 52 Stableford points off 90 percent of their actual handicaps.
Monday 11th November 2019
The Remembrance Sunday winner, straight hitting Steven Boyd (2), struck six birdies and kept a six off his card. Suffering nothing worse than three bogey fives Boyd had turned at one under for 20 points. He added another 21 points with a tremendous two under par back nine. Even on a short course 69, nett 67, is a super score.
Sunday 3rd November 2019
We played a Stableford in the old course layout at Castletown last Saturday. Anthony O’Mahony (9) began with a bogey but then burnt up the course to finish at four over even after incurring a two shot putting penalty. Three beautiful birdies on the back nine enabled O’Mahony to add 24 points to his opening 19 for a winning 43 points.
Sunday 27th October 2019
Having just won the Aon Trophy with 47 points Daniel Laughlin audaciously added the Syd Ashworth Cup to his collection. Laughlin (20) began with a birdie and ignoring an N/R on the Road Hole, and another on the 14th, he completed the course in just six over par. His two nett eagles, nine nett birdies and five nett pars mounted up to 45 points. Consequently Laughlin’s handicap has tumbled from (24) to (16) in two wonderful weeks.
Monday 21st October 2019
Daniel Laughlin (24), netted two eagles and ten birdies. This propelled him to 47 winning points in the Aon Trophy and resulted in a four shot reduction to his handicap. With a six over par back-nine, which included a triple bogey on the 11th, it shouldn’t be long before Laughlin drops down another category or two.
Sunday 13th October 2019
Winning the card countback Anthony O’Mahony, David Campbell, Bryan McMahon and Dominic Litton dovetailed particularly well on the all important back nine where they scored 67 points.
Sunday 6th October 2019
Having scored 43, 41 and 35 points respectively the previous week in the Standard Bank sponsored Stableford, Steven Boyd, Gez Bradley and David Quayle combined to cash-in again by walking away with Saturday’s Texas Scramble. Their 59, 13 under par score, included eagles on every par five and their nett score (57.9) was an incredible 2.5 shots better than their closest rivals after application of a 15% three man team handicap adjustment.
Tuesday 24th September 2019
The winners with 46 points were Steven Boyd (3) and Gez Bradley (1), they had almost even halves with 24 points out and 22 on the inward nine. Both players scored gross birdies on the 5th giving them four points on the hole. Boyd who recorded his score on every hole had a 66 gross, an impressive round.
